Evolve Housing believes the internet should be available to all.

Statistics showing disability in Australia. Disability affects 1 out of every 3 Australians (18.5 per cent of the population). 88 per cent are internet users. At end of 2012 only 26 per cent of Australian government websites met any level of WCAG 2.0 (A, AA or AAA)

A commitment has been made to writing web content that is readable and understandable, with images that contain relevant alt descriptions and the maintenance of heading hierarchy. Text alternatives are available for pdf files.

Navigation

The following list details some of the site-wide navigation features that improve the overall accessibility of this site.

The primary navigation system are menus that provide quick and easy access to the site’s major content areas.

The primary menu provide access to the main subsections of the Evolve Housing website.

Using keyboard controls ctrl and + the size of pages and text will be increased, and using ctrl and - the size of text and pages will be decreased.

Site content is accessible via keyboard controls.

Site content can be read by screen readers.

A 'Skip to content' link can be accessed by tabbing with keyboard commands or using a screenreader. This link is at the top of the page and allows you to skip directly to the content without having to scroll past the site navigation and headers.

Technical requirements

This website will run on a wide range of browsers and operating systems.

Visual design has been optimised for all monitors and contains a responsive template that scales according to the device.

Multimedia is used on this site, we have tried to make accessible alternatives available where possible with images that contain relevant alt descriptions. Including a commitment to increasing the accessibility of third party content used in the website such as YouTube.

The Evolve Housing website has been built according to HTML 5 specifications on the Drupal 7 Content Management System and a priority has been made choosing functionality that best conforms to Web Consortium Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0) priority AA checkpoints.

Layout is controlled by Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and has been written according to the CSS 2.1 specifications. The site is still navigable for users who do not use CSS or graphical browsers.

Structured and meaningful Hypertext Mark-up Language (HTML) has been used throughout the website to assist users accessing the site via non-visual means, such as users of screen-reading software.
